So we talked about rip-off car hire companies and how to avoid them, but what about how they’re ripping us off? High excess costs, fuel consumption costs and charging for extra people? We’ve listed some of the major ones to look out for when choosing a car hire company.
The problem is, a lot of them are doing it. But it’s good to be prepared….
Those ‘extras’ you didn’t know you needed
Car hire companies will often charge you for things like sat-navs and requirements for children like booster seats. Save your money and bring your own, you’ll be horrified at the extra cost.
Charges after your holiday
So your holiday has gone well but you arrive home to find a bill of £140 from the car hire company. You might think you’ve paid it off but some might claim you’ve returned the vehicle with a lower amount of fuel or actually damaged the car in some way. Our advice? Take pictures of the figures before returning the car.
The car company might try and talk you into upgrading for a better car once you have arrived. Don’t fall for this – you ordered the car you wanted. And if they claim there’s no other options, they should charge you the same price.
The fuel policy
Some hire companies demand you bring your car back with a full tank, yet quite often they give them to you half full in the first place. It doesn’t quite add up does it? And worst of all, you might not even use half of the petrol you’ve paid for in the first place. Rip-off!
All car hire companies will come with insurance once you’ve hired but if you read the small print you’ll find they come with huge excess costs! Why? So they can make some money off of your prang of course… We recommend driving with cling film wrapped around the car.
